Louis Comfort Tiffany

Louis Comfort Tiffany (born February 18, 1848 in New York City - died January 17, 1933 in New York) is an American artist known for his Art Nouveau stained glass. Founder of several companies, he also painted, designed jewelry and furniture. Today, a Tiffany Lievens from his founding period is worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Louis is the son of Harriet and Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of a thriving jewelry company, Tiffany & Co. He studied at the American Academy of Design in 1866.

His first success was a painting he made in 1867 as a student of George Inness. At the age of 24, he became interested in glassware. During this time he met Mary Woodbridge Goddard, whom he married on May 15, 1872.

In 1885, he founded his own glassware company and developed a process for making opal glass, while other artists preferred clear, tinted glass. Each point of view was inspired by the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement founded by William Morris in Britain. One of Comfort's competitors was glassmaker John La Farge (1835-1910).

In 1893, his company introduced a new technique, "favrile," for making vases and bowls. The name derives from the Latin fabrilis, meaning "made by hand. "1 He also made stained glass windows (notably at the Church of the Incarnation, Madison Avenue, New York), and his company designed a number of interior decorations. He used all his talents to design his own house, Laurelton Hall, in Oyster Bay, Long Island, which was completed in 1904.

He founded many businesses: L. C. Tiffany & Associated Artists (founded 1879), an interior decorating firm (on which he collaborated with Stanford White, among others), the Tiffany Glass Co (founded 1885), Tiffany glass and decorating Co, Tiffany Studios, Tiffany Stoves, and L. C. Tiffany Stoves.

He gradually retired from the business in the late 1920s. His company, Tiffany Studios, went bankrupt in 19321, a year before his death. Louis Comfort Tiffany was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
