Raphael Santi (1483-1520) Born in Urbino, Raphael Santi came early to be apprenticed to the famous Perugino, whose school emphasized quiet, balanced compositions, averse to excess. Later he moved to Florence, where Michelangelo and Da Vinci had already provided a vibrant artistic climate. Later, like Michelangelo, he was brought to Rome by Pope Julius II. There he decorated the papal apartments. After a short but very productive life, he died on his 37th birthday, Good Friday 1520.
