As early as the pre-dynastic period (in the fourth millennium BCE), cosmic powers were attributed to the falcon. In the highly complicated Egyptian world of gods, the falcon then continued to occupy a prominent place, although its position and significance varied depending on place and time. The statue dates from the Late Period, a turbulent time when the already divided Egypt was conquered by the Persians. These were then driven out by Alexander the Great, making Egypt part of the Hellenistic Empire. The falcon was found in Coptos, an important city in Upper Egypt from where trade routes to the Red Sea departed. One of the inlaid ivory eyes has been lost.
