    Giovanni de Angelis (1938)

Giovanni de Angelis grew up in a family of artists on Ischia. His talent and interest in the visual arts were therefore encouraged at an early age. At the age of 11 he was already considered a sculptural "child prodigy" and received his first prize (the Milan "Primo premio del Fanciullo Artista", the "first prize for artists of boyhood"), the following year the twelve-year-old spent some time in the studio of the renowned sculptor Alexander Zschokke in Basel. De Angeli's academic training began first at the Istituto d'arte di Napoli, and in 1960 he was finally accepted at the Accademie d'arte di Firenze. He completed his studies here and at the Munich Art Academy, where he stayed on a scholarship from the Federal Republic of Germany. These "apprenticeship years" were already accompanied by several prizes and collectors and major museums had long since become aware of the young artist.

For example, the renowned Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne acquired a work by the then 24-year-old as early as 1962 (a "Pregnant Woman", which has been part of the Ludwig Collection since 1986). In the decades that followed, de Angelis created an extensive body of work ranging from small and large sculptures to large monument ensembles. The artist works preferably in Carrara marble (he even lived near the quarries for some years) and in lava stone. From both he extracts thoroughly classical-looking forms and shapes, described in the critics again and again as immediately "sensually experienceable".
