The origins of Aztec dances go back to pre-Hispanic Mexico. They were initially ritual dances to worship the gods and to unite with nature. The dancers formed large circles and offerings were placed in the center, where they believed all energy was concentrated.
Aztec dances were also considered a ritual cleansing of body and soul and a medium to reach a higher level of consciousness, closer to the origin and destiny of man.
The size, posture and expressive gestures of this porcelain creation required a very complex process of elaboration, making it an excellent example of Lladró's technical and decorative virtuosity. The feathers, the knee and ankle cuffs, the skirt and the breastplate are worked in their entirety with minute ornamental details and with a meticulous use of enamel and metallic lusters.
A wide range of different shades of green and airbrush solutions with newly created colors were used to decorate the feathers. Special attention was also paid to the decoration of obsidian, a stone used for weapons and banners and believed since ancient times to possess protective powers and ward off negativity.
A work that conveys the power and energy of these traditional dances.
