Yoshimoto Gesso Vase 'Sparrow with red Flowers'

The Japanese draftsman Gesso was part of the Shin Hanga movement which, during the first half of the 19th century breathed new life into ukiyo-e by adding elements from European impressionism to their traditional woodblock art.

Bright colours, careful composition and a Western use of perspective characterise Gesso s wonderful landscapes and appealing kacho-e drawings of birds and flowers.
