Atlas, son of Iapetus and the nymph Clymene, led the rebellion of the Titans against Zeus and as punishment he was sentenced to hold the heavens on his shoulders.... Countless legends exist about this strong man who carried the weight of the heavenly spheres to keep them separate from the earth and maintain the balance of the universe. Great scholarship in mathematics and astrology was also attributed to him. The creation of this Atlas required a set of 12 different molds to make the porcelain fragments that make up the final piece. To add to the power of this god, it was decided not to apply any other color except for some carefully chosen accents of golden luster and the iridescent metallized enamel of the sphere.
